Bridgland Moulders Ltd specialise in laminating and bonding decks and hulls for Oyster Marine’s ocean going yachts. The yachts, ranging from 46’ to 82’, are world renowned and have achieved two Queens awards. Bridgland Moulders were struggling to achieve the same world class performance, failing to meet their sales and delivery demands. Support from the MAS-East team helped deliver significant lead time reductions and dramatically improve on-time delivery performance.
The focus of the team's improvement activity was on planning and scheduling of the hull build, ensuring that the core business values of quality and performance were not compromised.
The key was to improve the sequencing of materials supply as well as improving availability of tooling and information.
Bridgland's team were introduced to a number of tools and techniques including 5S and workplace organisation where changes made to working conditions enabled the team to fully embrace the improvements
needed.
Before the improvement activity took place, not a single hull had been delivered on-time for over a year. After making the identified improvements, the delivery performance of the team has improved dramatically, so much so, that over the last 10 months, the Bridgland team has achieved nearly 95% on-time delivery with 18 out of 19 boats achieving the Oyster Marine
on-time delivery bonus.
Another major change in the business is the improved happiness and motivation of the employees. Achieving the delivery bonus has contributed to a 10% increase in salary with unplanned absenteeism falling from 28% down to
less than 8%.
